BREAKING NEWS:

The Hartford Courant has an article and videos about the Wesleyan shooting.

Yesterday, May 6, 2009 in Middletown, Connecticut, a student at Wesleyan University, Johanna Justin-Jinich, a 21 year old junior, was fatally shot 7-8 times while working in the Red and Black cafe in the Wesleyan bookstore. The shooting occurred just after 1p.m. Johanna was taken to a hospital where she died.

The alleged shooter has been identified as 29 year old, Stephen Morgan. He has connections to New York, Colorado, and Massachusetts and has not yet been caught. Morgan has also expressed  anti-Semitic feelings and the Jewish community is on alert as well. This shooting is believed to be targeted, as Morgan and Justin-Jinich met during a summer program at NYU in 2007.

The university has been on total lockdown since yesterday afternoon, which was a day initially planned for the Spring Fling, a day celebrating the end of classes. All activities were canceled. Classes have already ended and final exams are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 11th.

This shooting is note-worthy because my brother goes to Wesleyan and is a senior. Although I have never attended the school, I have always felt like part of the community. Through my brother, I have met and have become friends with a number of students there. Johanna Justin-Jinich was very friendly with my brother and his roommates, so they all knew her well. I wish the Wesleyan community and the Justin-Jinich family all the best in this terrible time.
