Last night some friends and I went to a talk at the Corcoran College of Art + Museum by former Project Runway contestant from season 2, Nick Verreos. Nick currently teaches at the Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing (FIDM) and his talk seemed like a marketing and recruitment campaign for the school. Nick talked about his life and how he got into the fashion business. A little known fact about him is that he went to UCLA for undergrad and studied Political Science, because he was afraid his parents would be embarrassed with him.

After Nick spoke, he showed a movie of some of his current/former students’ work at FIDM. The fashion program his students were in works very similarly to Project Runway, where they have to create a collection which at the end of their program, they show at a runway show. It was really neat being treated to seeing the runway show clips of so many of Nick’s students.

After the video, there was a brief Q&A before we all headed out of the lecture hall for a reception complete with as Nick put it, “taking as many Facebook photos as you want” and autographs. Nick also had a few of his designs on display, including a black mermaid dress that I loved (shown below left).

My friends and I somehow managed to be at the front of the autograph/photo-taking line at the start of the reception. I got to talk to Nick, telling him how much I loved his mermaid dress designs. He told me that the black mermaid dress he brought with him from Los Angeles was difficult bringing on the plane and that apparently it weighs a lot. He joked that people probably assumed he was a drag queen, carrying the dress around with him. We all got his autograph and many photos taken together and it was a lot of fun. Below are a few photos of the man, himself. [Notice his skinny legged purple pants. I thought they were a riot!]
