Backstrom’s Not A Baby

22 01 2009

Breaking News about the upcoming NHL All Star Weekend:

Capitals’ star, 21 year old Nicklas Backstrom has opted out of playing in the NHL YoungStars game. He was voted into the game, which is like the All Star game for the younger players of the league. This doesn’t make sense however, because some young rookies have played in the real All Star game (i.e: Alex Ovechkin). The YoungStars game is sometimes seen as the Junior All Star game or the All Star game for the players who were not in the running for the “real” one.

Backstrom who recently turned 21, played in the 2008 YoungStars game. He did not give a reason for choosing not to play this year, but did say:

“This year I felt like it made more sense for me to give someone else that opportunity and use this time to rest and prepare for the second half of the season with the Washington Capitals. I can assure Caps fans that I’m not injured and will be ready to go Tuesday in Boston.”

I think that Backstrom was insulted into being slighted to play for the younger game. Many people think that Backstrom should have been included in the voting for the All Star game and that the voting system should be changed. All Star game voting is open to the public. Other Capitals players who were in the running for the All Star game were Alexander Semin and Mike Green, both of which did not receive enough votes to participate in the All Star weekend. Alex Ovechkin, however, will be skating in his 3rd All Star game.

This season, Backstrom’s 36 assists are tied for seventh in the league and his 24 points on the power play rank tied for third. (The St. Louis Blues’ 20 year old Quebec native, David Perron will replace Backstrom in this weekend’s YoungStars Game.)
